“Granny Lee” Biopic Begins Casting

The much-anticipated biopic Granny Lee has commenced casting this April. The film will chronicle the life of Granny Lee, a transgender icon from Johannesburg's 1980s disco scene, known for her bold costumes and defiance of Apartheid-era norms. South African actress Soli Philander is set to star, with Alexandra Billings producing. Directed by the father-son duo, The Gabriels, the film promises to be a zany yet poignant tribute to a trailblazing figure in LGBTQ+ history.  

 

“Meet the Khumalos” Premieres on Netflix

Meet the Khumalos, a reimagining of the hit Meet the Kandasamys, premiered on Netflix on

April 11. Directed by Jayan Moodley, the romantic comedy stars Khanyi Mbau, Ayanda Borotho, and the late Connie Chiume. The film explores suburban rivalries and secret romances, delivering laughs and heartfelt moments.

Showmax Showcases First-Time Directors

Showmax, in collaboration with the Joburg Film Festival, unveiled a slate of films by firsttime directors from across Africa. Seven films premiered at the festival in March and are now streaming on Showmax, highlighting fresh voices and diverse stories.

“Awkward Dates” Makes TV Debut

Lasizwe Dambuza's popular YouTube series Awkward Dates transitioned to television, premiering on Mzansi Magic on April 12. The show, featuring Lasizwe on blind dates with various celebrities, has been a hit online and continues to charm audiences on the small screen. 

“Drag Race South Africa” Casting Underway

The South African adaptation of RuPaul's Drag Race has begun casting for its inaugural season. Set to air on WOW Presents Plus, the show marks the franchise's first foray into Africa, promising to spotlight the continent's vibrant drag scene.
